Troubleshooting
Plane/Propeller stop working
Verify the battery condition firstly. Then check the plane throttle and steering. The motor may out of position if throttle just respond with noise and prop not working. Need a long iron bar to move the motor back to position. If you cant hear motor working, then probably is the receiver mistake, need to replace it.
Plane cant fly/Plane not work
Check if you connect the plane battery firstly then start the remote to bind them together. Ensure the throttle had been unlocked before flying, by pushing the left rod of controller up and down. Motor dislocation caused by plane crash may also have this issue. If everything fine, try throttle and steering, to see if receiver working good.
Elevation not working/No lifts
Be sure the remote and plane being well pairing. Elevator mistake may also cause plane nosedrive and cant fly well. Check if elevator being well centered, adjust it by aileron trimmer button on controller, or manually move the push rod of elevator by its arc-shaped section slightly. If everything ok, then may caused by receiver mistake.
Steering hard or cant turning
Make sure you connect the remote with rc plane well. Check if rudder being well centered, adjust it by rudder trimmer button, or manually move the push rod of rudder by its arc-shaped section slightly. If center good, then try throttle and check if motor working to exclude receiver problem. If nothing bad, then it’s a servo problem.
Avoid plane to fly away
Keep in mind to fully charge the battery before flying. Follow the right pairing step for plane and remote. Firstly connect the plane battery then start the controller. Make sure you play the plane within control range, avoid to play it around high interference sites.
Prop fall off/keep spinning
Normally, prop fall of means propeller saver is working to prevent propeller broken when plane hit something. Otherwise pls check the propeller base, see if there is any damage, need to replace the prop base. Receiver abnormity may cause the plane propeller cant stop spinning.

Every year, hundreds of students participate in UAV design competitions such as AIAA Design Build Fly or SAE Aero Design: Each team has less than one school year to design, build, and fly an airplane, ranging from a small remote-control airplane to a large autonomous vehicle capable of flying itself and of dropping packages (or even smaller airplanes) that land on a target.
For students without an aeronautical engineering background, who are majoring in fields like mechanical engineering or computer science, many questions naturally arise, such as:
• What wing area is necessary for good flight characteristics?
• How are the optimal aspect ratio and wingspan determined?
• What is a realistic weight goal for an aircraft of this size and engine power?
• How is the best airfoil selected?
• What is the ideal length for the tail cone / tail boom(s)?
• How are the sizes of the tail fins and control surfaces calculated?
• Fewer ribs require a thicker spar, so… What rib spacing will lead to the minimal total structural weight of the wings?
• How can a wing spar be designed that has the required strength and stiffness as well as minimal weight, while also allowing the wing to be easily disassembled into multiple sections for transportability?
• What electronic components are typically found in an RC airplane? How do they work? How can their required capabilities for my airplane (e.g. power and torque) be calculated?
I have mentored multiple groups of students. This book collects my answers to these questions, mostly consisting of step-by-step analyses that use methods and best-practices from the aeronautical industry, from engineering textbooks, and from the expertise of RC airplane builders and ultralight designers.
This book is also a great resource for any hobbyist who wants to design and build an RC airplane while doing at least a little bit of engineering beyond “That looks about right” or “I’ll just copy the way it’s done in similar airplanes”. The simplified analyses in this book can be done by anyone with an understanding of high-school physics and will allow for an airplane that has minimal weight and minimal drag while being able to perform a desired mission (i.e. carrying a desired payload at a desired speed, and being able to take off and land on a desired runway length and to climb out at a desired angle).
The same principles apply to designing an airplane that can carry one or more humans… but, for that, I recommend Daniel Raymer’s Simplified Airplane Design for Homebuilders, a terrific book that was my main inspiration for writing Simplified UAV Design for Students. (In other words: Please do not trust your life to a vehicle that was designed using the simplified equations in my book!)
